Enter Today to Win a New Ottlite Product - UPDATE Winner Announced It probably will come as no surprise to anyone out there that waking up bright eyed and bushy tailed is especially hard here in the Pacific Northwest in Winter after the end of Daylight Savings when the sun rises well after the morning commute (to set again shortly before the commute home). Our day often begins in a dark, quiet room with the sound of Shibas snoring and Jason panicking “GAH… slept in again…”, jumping out of bed, stumbling to the closet while promptly stubbing his toe on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed and tripping over one of the Shiba kids, now fully awake and underfoot in the shadowy room.
Win a Free Class with The Shibaguyz and a three-day marketplace pass at Vogue Knitting Live in Pasadena. You've got your yarn, your hooks, and are ready to sit down and start creating that beautiful piece from the pattern you just purchased. You turn to page 44 and start looking at the pattern... what the heck is HDC? What direction am I supposed to be working? There's something that looks like Egyptian hieroglyphics on the next page... what have I done? GAH!! Fear not intrepid crocheter! Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby and Craftsy are here to give you all the answers to finding, reading, and understanding crochet patterns. Yep, Shannon and the folks at Craftsy have been working on another FAB crochet class and this one is all about Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns. In fact that's what its called, "Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns" (direct and to the point!). This course was created to teach new crocheters all the skills you need to read and successfully navigate crochet patterns. This will also be a FAB reference tool for the "I've been reading crochet patterns for fourty years" experienced stitchers. Regardless of your skill level you'll be learning tons about the in's and out's of crochet pattern reading and you'll be able to keep the class as an instant reference tool anytime you need it! You will learn by watching Shannon complete each stitch, while at the same time seeing the stitch's name, abbreviation, and chart symbols on your screen, so you'll recognize them in multiple formats... That's just the start! You get to apply what you are learning right away by making the "Modern Sampler Scarf" pattern that comes with the course. Shannon helps you with reading the written pattern AND the chart and how it all translates into actual stitches and rows. Before you know it you'll be piecing together your own sampler scarf with stitches so true they must have been blessed by a Pink Fairy Armadillo (which incidentally is a real animal… GAH!). I'll be there with you every step of the way! When you’ve completed the entire course, you'll be shocked by how easily you can read through crochet patterns and get to stitching more and more advanced pieces. Don’t worry about forgetting any of the tips and techniques because the BEST part of all Craftsy classes is you can watch them whenever, and wherever you like and you can watch them as often as you like since your purchase never expires! Have a few minutes to watch a segment? Need to go back and see one of our tips & tricks again? Want to watch that technique one more time to get it juuuuust right? You can do ALL that with a Craftsy class because you own it forever! National Craft Month Week 4 Giveaway Package Featuring: ZOOM LOOM! Weaving Done The Easy Way.
The Shibaguyz love to try new things... from sewing to cooking to biking and hiking, we are always excited to pick up some new technique to add to our repertoire. That being said, we don't spend a lot of time looking for the hard way to do something. We are firm believers in giving yourself an easy victory then moving on to the next step. So when the FAB folks at Schacht Spindle Company reached out to us to try their Zoom Loom we, of course, said "Sure, we'd love to give it a shot".
Shortly after our Zoom Loom arrived Jason picked it up and started playing with it. Even through he'd never used a pin loom before, within 30 minutes was making perfect squares for sewing/weaving together into larger pieces... Like we said, give yourself an easy victory, and this was easy.
Now he's now totally addicted! In just one evening of sitting in front of the television he can pop out 10-12 squares. He's already got a pile ready to piece together for a sampler afghan... all made of short scraps of yarn from left over projects that were just sitting in boxes waiting to be used. Jason says "It's like a quilter taking large pieces of fabric, cutting into small pieces to sew back together... only you get to create the pieces you want in whatever colors you like".
This is SO easy and SO much fun we asked the Schacht Spindle Company if they would be willing to give away a Zoom Loom for National Craft Month 2016. They said YES! WOOHOO! So our week 4 giveaway package for National Craft Month 2016 features the Zoom Loom.
Here is what Schacht has to say about their Zoom Loom:

Here is what Schacht has to say about their Zoom Loom:
We’ve taken a simple design and transformed it into an efficient and comfortable little loom. If you’ve ever woven on a pin loom, you’ll love our new and improved model. Small and compact, the Zoom Loom is easy to take with you. Weave anywhere, any time.
- - The sloping interior edge guides your weaving needle.
- - Graceful extended sides are easy to hold.
- - Molded-in instructions on the front and back are always there when you need them.
- - A handy slot holds the starting yarn without knotting.
- - Made in Boulder, Colorado!
Now is your chance for some instant gratification of your own. You can enter to win our National Crafty Month prize package including your very own Zoom Loom, provided by the Schacht Spindle Company. Along with the Zoom Loom, this week's winner will also receive a signed copy of Shannon's new book, Crochet Geometry, (woohoo!) and an assortment of our favorite products from Eucalan Gentle Wash.

Crochet Toolkit from Craftsy.com
Folks who follow our escapades on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram know Shannon took a little trip to Denver, Colorado back in December. If you were watching closely, you even noticed him posting a photo like this.
Yup… that's Shannon on set in front of THE Craftsy logo! (Note the inclusion of garments from our last two books… hehehe…) |
This class is a FAB fav topic of ours: Tips and tricks to take your crochet from good to great! In this course, Shannon takes you step-by-step through the process of how to make solid and lace fabrics, brush up your math skills, and he teaches you how to keep those edges clean and tidy for a professional appearance. Dreaming of smooth, drapey fabric? Find out how linked stitches can close the gaps and make it happen. Then, add some "wow" techniques to your toolkit, such as crochet I-cord. Yup… two types of crochet cords including attached cords for edges!
Everything you learn here you'll be able to apply right away! You get techniques and stitches we use in real life, every day.

Ottlite Mini LED Flip Light
We LOVE our OttLite lamps. Shannon has two in his study and Jason uses them in his photo studio to get clear photos with clean white light. We know you'll love this clip on LED light from OttLite!
With OttLite you’ll see more clearly and comfortably, which makes everything you love to do – from sewing and scrapbooking to reading and computer work to crafts and crossword puzzles – easier and more enjoyable. It’s like natural daylight indoors! Click here to learn more.
- Ottlite will send you a MiniLED flip-lite to pack in your bag or carry in a pocket so you always have clear bright light with you. We recently used ours at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Show on the show floor to better see the colors of yarn perfectly without having to go outside.

We can't say enough good things about Eucalan. Their product is tailor made for crochet and knitting handcrafter... although quilters and sewers swear by this cleaning product as well. This set of 5 bottles of Eucalan is neatly packaged in a clear re-usable zip bag in each of their scents: Natural, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Jasmine.

How Our Crochet Community Can Give Back one person at a time
As the night temperatures dip lower, we find ourselves digging into the cedar chest at the end of the bed for those warm afghans and quilts to cuddle up under. The safety of a roof over our heads, the warmth and protection or our homes and clothing, and the love of friends and family are all things we are thankful for every day. As a matter of fact, the mantra that comes to me throughout the day and that has gotten me through spots when I felt like my world was spinning a little out of control is: I am Safe, Warm, and Loved. |
How to make Reversible Vertical Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing
What is it?
First, let's give a quick definition of ribbing. Simply put, Ribbing is a series of raised ridges – called wales – and contrasting low troughs.
That said, there are a number of ways to create combinations of wales and troughs using crochet stitches. In fact, we have:
Reversible Vertical Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing
One-Sided Vertical Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing
Horizontal Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing
Horizontal tbl Crochet Ribbing
We will be covering ALL of these in future Technique Tuesday articles but, for today's Reversible Vertical Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing tutorial, we are creating a reversible vertical post stitch ribbing with wales on both sides of the fabric through the use alternating Front Post Double Crochet Stitches and Back Post Double Crochet Stitches.
Remember: Post stitches are worked around the post of a crochet stitch creating a stitch that is raised to the front or the back of our working row depending on whether we work a Front Post Crochet Stitch or a Back Post Crochet Stitch.
Reversible Vertical Post Stitch Crochet Ribbing creates a series of wales and troughs that are made vertically in relation to the working direction of our crochet fabric. That is, we start at the top or bottom of the fabric and create wales and troughs by working rows of alternating Front and Back Post Stitches. These alternating Front Post Crochet Stitches and Back Post Crochet Stitches build off of one another in successive rows creating the vertical wales and troughs – Ribbing!

Last week, we started our discussion about post stitches with a brief overview of what a post stitch is. You can find that post here:
Technique Tuesday - Post Stitches: How to make the Front Post Double Crochet stitch.
Let's do a quick review…
Post stitches are just like any other crochet stitches only the stitches are worked around the "post" of a crochet stitch rather than through the loops of the "head" of a crochet stitch.

Foundation Half Double Crochet (Fhdc)
WHAT IS IT?
The Foundation Half Double Crochet stitch technique (abbreviated Fhdc) is an alternative to the instructions at the beginning of a crochet pattern that tell you to chain a certain number of stitches.
The Foundation Half Double Crochet stitch technique (abbreviated Fhdc) is an alternative to the instructions at the beginning of a crochet pattern that tell you to chain a certain number of stitches.
This technique simultaneously creates a row of "chain" stitches AND a row of half double crochet stitches (abbreviated hdc) without making two passes. Basically, it takes the place of two rows of stitches: the "chain" row that makes up the beginning base and the next row of half double crochet that is worked into that row of chains.
You might well be wondering why we keep using " " around the word chain… good question! It's because this isn't REALLY a chain stitch… not really… but it LOOKS like a chain stitch so that's what's important. In a previous Technique Tuesday article about the Foundation Single Crocht, we decided this was best called a Faux Chain (abbreviated FxCh). It's taking a little while to catch on but we're going to keep on with it because it makes us happy. |
Once you've practiced a bit with this stitch and create it comfortably, take a close look at the "chain" part of the stitch as you are making it. You will see how the "chain" is not, in fact, a chain at all but a clever doppelganger of the chain. It serves the purpose of looking like a base row of chain stitches but it is made in such a way that it is more elastic.
Which brings us to our next point…
Technique
Duplicate Stitch
Duplicate Stitch
What is it?
The Duplicate Stitch technique is used to join the last stitch of a round to the first stitch of a round by creating a "duplicate" top on the skipped stitch it is worked over. The tail of the yarn is woven over the first stitch of the round in such a way that the front and back loops of that first stitch are duplicated. This creates a clean finish for the final stitch of a round and makes a nearly invisible join.

Why use the Duplicate Stitch?
Duplicate Stitch is a FAB method for finishing or binding off circular crochet and knitting projects.
Duplicate Stitch is a FAB method for finishing or binding off circular crochet and knitting projects.
Who amongst us has not gotten to the end of a crochet motif and been a little stumped by what to do to finish off that last stitch? How to make it look neat and clean without looking like we just reached the end of our project and tied a big ol' knot in it?
And who in our ranks has lovingly hand stitched a pair of toe-up socks and gotten to the bind off at the cuff just to sit there and stare at it hoping some divine messenger from the knitting ultraverse will magically grant us the ability to fuse our stitches with the power of our mind? What… just me? Fine… just me… For the photos of this tutorial, we used a circular crochet motif to demonstrate. But don't stop there, with a little practice this technique makes invisible finishes for the cuffs of circular crochet or knit socks and sleeves, as well as the edges of top down hats and pullover sweaters. |
The bottom line is, anywhere we work in the round or in a spiral and end with an open tube of some sort (hats, sock and sleeve cuffs, hems), we need to fasten off or bind off in such a way that the edge of our finished project doesn't look like it was gnawed on by a demented badger.
