Crochet Gives Back

10/10/2014

How Our Crochet Community Can Give Back one person at a time

Crochet Gives Back – Helping others feel Safe, Warm, and Loved by Shibaguyz Designz

As the night temperatures dip lower, we find ourselves digging into the cedar chest at the end of the bed for those warm afghans and quilts to cuddle up under. The safety of a roof over our heads, the warmth and protection or our homes and clothing, and the love of friends and family are all things we are thankful for every day.

As a matter of fact, the mantra that comes to me throughout the day and that has gotten me through spots when I felt like my world was spinning a little out of control is:

I am Safe, Warm, and Loved.

Unfortunately, there are many folks out there who lack adequate shelter and warmth, who don't have warm clothes, and who don't have the love and protection of family and friends. When we start to think about it, we get a little overwhelmed and I know I used to throw my hands in the air thinking there is too much to do. I'm only one person… how could I possibly make a dent in this massive problem? How could I help all those people feel safe, warm, and loved like I do?

The answer is: one person can't fix it all. But one person can help one other person… and that's a great place to start.

And, when you think about it, the answer to how can I as a stitcher help others feel safe, warm, and loved is really pretty obvious. The very skills we possess of being able to take yarn and make it into afghans, sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves, and toys really is an amazing thing! Take that skill and use it to help provide safety, warmth, and to show love to others and what a powerful tool those skills become!

Furthermore, by combining our skills as designers with the power of the internet, we realized we could make it a little easier for one other person to help one other person… maybe even hundreds of people helping hundreds of other people!

As a result, we created our free booklet: Crochet Gives Back - 8 Free Afghan Blocks for Warm Up America.

Crochet Gives Back contains patterns for eight afghan blocks that are sturdy, warm, and fun to make. Each of the eight crochet blocks was designed for the specific purpose of making a warm, sturdy afghan that would provide a little comfort and security to those who needed it and to show love to those who don't have it in their lives.

(The link to the free download is at the end of this post.)

Even though the blocks are designed to be made to the specific dimensions for Warm Up America, we encourage you to make the blocks and stitch them together to donate afghans to your own local shelters, charities, and neighbors. Reach out to the community around you! If you look, you will find you don't have to go far to find a way to give back. Just ask yourself: Where do people need to feel safe, warm, and loved?

We have all received so much and most of us are fortunate enough to have the safety, projection, and warmth of a home. Now, before the bitter cold sets in, is the time when we can all use our skills to give back and help those who do not have the same safety, warmth, and love.
