Hitomezashi Sashiko Essentials
Thursday, May 26, 2022
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Let’s start at the very beginning… a very good place to start. Every journey begins with that first step. Whether you’re learning your scales or heading in a new direction, all those adages are true; and this is your invitation to take that first step with us on your hitomezashi sashiko journey. Hitomezashi sashiko is one of the forms of sashiko: the Japanese hand stitching technique for mending, reinforcing, and enhancing fabric.NOTE: This class is a prerequisite for our next-level hitomezashi sashiko classes. So, if you want to take the fancy stuff later this year, start with this class.

Can’t make it to class on the day at the time it is offered live? No worries! This class will be recorded, and you will have access to your instructors for 30 days following the live class.

Scrappy Wonky Quilt Block Bonanza
Recorded Live on Creative Spark
7 Classes
April - October

Picture
Set Your Creativity Free With Improv Versions of Classic Quilt BlocksEnter a magical world of wild abandon where we sew using our eyes and decision-making skills instead of store-bought patterns. In this class, award-winning designers Shannon Leigh Roudhán and Jason Bowlsby will teach you to develop the critical eye and skills needed to create your own unique, contemporary, wonky interpretations of iconic quilt blocks. Enjoy the fun of making scrappy blocks (no predetermined pattern!) that match your style and taste, with guidance on improv techniques and color choice.

The Scrappy Wonky experience inspires an OMPH of creativity and imagination. Starting with Scrappy Wonky Log Cabin block, follow a progressively wonky path through pineapples, two kinds of stars, the ever-popular Scrappy Wonky Rose, and the wild and fun Genie in a Bottle Block. Piece them together into a wall hanging, throw, or full-size quilt — it’s up to you!

Classes are sold à la carte and as a bundle. Take one, two, or three block classes that look intriguing to you; or take the entire series. Creative Spark includes a payment plan for anyone purchasing the bundle.

Each block is taught in a LIVE Zoom class with a studio audience of fellow sewists. After class, we will edit the content and folks can watch, re-watch, and learn from the recording with no expiration. No need to be present for the LIVE class and you can join at any time!

Hitomezashi Version of Asanoha
Thursday, June 23, 2022

Picture
Asanoha (Hemp Leaf) is one of the most iconic of the Moyouzashi sashiko stitch patterns. But what if you want to make this pattern on a smaller grid? It can be done! In this class, we will start at the very beginning with measuring and marking a Hitomezashi grid to stitch this traditional patting in a non-traditional way. In the second half of class, we will begin stitching using the proper order of operation for Sashiko and give tips for how to avoid common mishaps.
Prerequisite: Sashiko Essentials Class or equivalent experience stitching Hitomezashi sashiko.

Modern Hitomezashi Sashiko (stitching off-grid)
Thursday, July 7, 2022

Picture
Modern Sashiko artists are breaking the rules of traditional Hitomezashi and coming up with incredible results. By making small changes to the way we look at a basic Hitomezashi grid, it’s easy to create all kinds of modern adaptations using one simple stitching technique. Join Shannon and Jason as they show us how to stitch “off the grid” while remaining “on the grid.” This second-level course is where old-style sashiko meets modern aesthetics.

Custom Fit 101: T-shirt Alterations
Thursday, July 7, 2022

Picture
Who doesn’t love a good T-shirt? They go with everything from jeans to modern business attire. They come in all the colors, with and without graphics. They’ve been donned by James Dean, the Boss, and the entire cast of West Side Story. The only issue that makes this fashion icon fall short of perfection is … the fit. T-shirts are produced to fit a wide population, most of whom have unique sizing issues. Curvy? Broad chested and narrow waisted? Your new T right out of the package is going to hang awkwardly rather than compliment you. And buying “athletic fit” or “shaped” T’s can be quite expensive. What’s the solution? Custom fit your T-shirt to fit YOUR body.

Kogin-zashi Bookmark
Saturday, August 27, 2022

Picture
Some of our first memories of projects in crochet, knitting, and cross-stitch are of bookmarks. Bookmarks are always a good early project choice because they don’t require advanced concentration skills, or a huge time commitment, and the finished piece is useful and personal to the maker. Join Shannon and Jason as they teach you the art of Kogin-zashi by making your own Kogin Bookmark!

This Kogin version of these practical little treasures is a satisfying make when you don’t want to wait for a week (or a month) to finish a complex project. It doesn’t require too much concentration, so you can free up more of your mind to watch your favorite Wachowski film or keep watch for your stop during your inter-island ferry commute.

Saturday, September 17, 2022, 1:00 PM 3:00 PM (PDT)

We all have the compulsive drive to preserve moments in time with a token of events and places. For a lot of us, those tokens take the form of the humble T-shirt. Do you, like us, you have stacks of these cotton jersey garments emblazoned with the memetic logos, mascots, catch phrases, and iconic imagery from colleges, movies, sports teams, national parks, your favorite pub, or that one with David Hasselhoff with embossed glitter graphic (just us?)?  If, like us, you do have these souvenirs taking up space, we’ll show you how to turn them into a unique heirloom T-shirt memory quilt.
Make a memory quilt with your kids’ sports jerseys, keep those high school or college memories alive, or make an iconic souvenir of your favorite vacation spots … or mix and match them all! T-shirt memory quilts are cozy and easy to make, even for a novice sewist. Just gather up your materials and meet us in the virtual classroom, and we’ll walk you through the process step by step. By the end of class you’ll be well on your way to creating a memory you can wrap yourself up in.
No prerequisite - just be able to turn on your sewing machine - and we can help you with that, too!

The Colors of My Pride Quilt Workshop
on Creative Spark

Picture
Our Colors of My Pride quilt pattern is written for sizes from a lap throw to a king size quilt. If you’ve never made a quilt before or never made a quilt with this style of construction and want to try a smaller project first, we also included sizes for a 3 x 4 block wall hanging and a 4-block sampler. And, if you want a little help with the blocks or you just want to hang out with other FAB folx making their quilts, we have developed a class that will be teaching on Creative Spark where we will be making the 4-block sampler.

The class is focused on the stacked spiral style of construction of the scrappy wonky log cabin Pride blocks and shows how to frame those blocks in the four different ways we did for our quilt. We will also cover how to assemble and finish your sampler including options for making the quilt sandwich, quilting options for domestic machines, binding your sampler using a faced binding, and two different options for hanging your work of art for display.

If you have never made a quilt before or if you are newer to quilting, you’re going to love how forgiving this method of construction is. No… really… time after time, folx in our scrappy wonky quilt classes who were intimidated by matching corners and perfect lines are thrilled with how they can sit down and, with a basic machine that sews a straight line, can create something glorious and stunning. Experienced quilters will love this style of construction both because of the freedom of expression it offers and the modern esthetic it creates. Most experienced quilt makers love the sense of play in the creation of these blocks and the resulting randomness is always a thrill… new or experienced!

Hanten Jacket Make-Along
on Creative Spark

Picture
Picture
This iconic jacket is about to become your new go-to wardrobe staple. We don’t make the rules… that’s just how it goes once you put this on. Perfectly proportioned to fit without binding or sagging, our Hanten Short Jacket is versatile enough to wear for your everyday grab-and-go alternative to a hoodie or to dress up for work or really strut its stuff in finer fabrics at a more high-falutin-fancy-pants (yes, you heard us) event.
Once you make one, you'll want a few of them in different fabrics and colors. But let's start at start with a contemporary rendition of the traditional Hanten with boro-inspired layered patchwork and graphic lines of sashiko stitching.
First time making a garment? Have no fear! Through class sessions and course discussion rooms, we will walk you through the process from measuring yourself to making the first fabric cuts. We’ll then take you step-by-step through the details of patch placement where you can choose our layout or find one that suits your own tastes. Next, we’ll move on to the sashiko stitching that brings it all together and we’ll finish off with final construction. By the end, all that’s left to do is for you to wear your new creation with pride!
Includes access to course videos, downloads, the Creative Spark private community, and discussion with your instructor. Your course content does not expire.
