Artist Statement:
What was born out of necessity becomes, through the lens of time, art.
We are fiber and textile artists refusing to shy away from the creative chaos that all of “this” <waves arms about wildly> inspires; exploring human history and shared culture through the craft and handwork arts passed down through generations of makers without the controls of a discipline. We look to find the beauty in the eccentric, the ordinary, and the mundane. We seek neither to express the chaos nor to bring order to it but instead to find harmony with and create within it.
Shannon's experience as a transgender woman along with Jason’s as a cis-gay man and our 28 years of shared experience as a cis/trans couple informs our work and creative decisions. Inspiration comes to us in varied ways: bubbling up from our unique backgrounds growing up making things, creating from what we have available rather than always purchasing new, and our journey through the many transitions of our lives.
Our art encompasses the literal fabric of history as our materials are most often repurposed, reworked, and rescued scrap fabric and fiber which is then molded through abstract and improv piecing techniques.
A key component of our work is sharing the information we learn and passing on foundational skills in varying levels to as wide a variety of makers as possible; from artists to hobbyists to functional doers (sometimes you just need to patch a pair of jeans or know how to make a red sauce from scratch). Some of our greatest inspiration comes from sharing with the creative community through lectures and workshops.
Our end goal is to reveal and revel in the artisanship and artistry created through heritage skills, necessity, and utilitarian practice. We create for the sake of creation - without the prerequisite of having concrete forethought into the purpose of the outcome. At the same time, we aim to create pieces that are part of everyday life to remind us of the innate beauty and exquisite chaos in the act of creating.
