The Gathered Shoulder Top  from Crochet Geometry

Sometimes you just want to make something beautiful without worrying too much about… ya know… thinking! Sometimes you just want to pick up a beautiful yarn, make a pretty stitch, and wear it. Scarves? Wraps? Yup… been there done that. How about something a little more special?

That's the exact thought process that led us to create the Gathered Shoulder Top in our latest book, Crochet Geometry. And, yes, if you have only made scarves, afghans, and dishcloths before, you can make this simple, yet elegant, top.

As with so many of the other garments in Crochet Geometry, we looked to rectangles as the building blocks for this elegant design.

Next, since we were knew we were going to put a gather at the tops of the shoulders, we experimented with a lot of different yarns looking for the right fabric to give us a gather without uncomfortable (and unsightly!) bulk. We finally settled on a beautiful lightweight silk blend yarn and combined it with a mix of lace and solid texture stitches to created the perfect balance between structure and softness. 

After we had the right fabric for the design, we looked again to the construction and decided to put a little softness in the front around the neckline. Not wanting to add any shaping, the subtle drape of the front is created with a simple play on dimensions and gathering the finished shoulder seams creates gentle folds along the tops of the front panel.

Perfect simplicity of form and no shaping at all thanks to some easy fabric manipulation at the shoulders. And, since this design consists of two rectangles of crochet fabric, you can adjust the length, armholes, and neckline without engaging too much brain power at all!

You’ll love the fit and feel of this top whether you wear it as a stand-alone piece in warmer weather or layer it under your favorite jacket for cooler months.
