Shibaguyz Designz Camp STITCHES Mannequin Challenge

Students of the Shibaguyz Designz Camp STITCHES San Antonio Garment Design Class Take On The Mannequin Challenge

We might have mentioned we had a great time at Camp Stitches San Antonio in January. Everyone was working so hard, we decided to have a little fun after lunch the final day to make our own version of the "Mannequin Challenge Video". If you are not familiar with the mannequin challenge here's the scoop: It's like taking a moment in time and freezing it, like you stumbled upon a room full of mannequins. It's not easy to get an entire room full of laughing students to freeze for a full minute... but the end results are TOTALLY worth it. See the video below or check it out on our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/IEcTWixdB4g
Thank you to our FAB garment design students. You all rocked the challenge!
We'd love to have you join in the fun at the next Camp STITCHES in Vermont.
Click the button below to get all the information.

Talk to you soon!

Instant Closures... and Satisfaction

Early in the process of creating Crochet Geometry we noticed that a number of the pieces would be perfectly suited for some beautiful adornment. Alas, finding striking buttons, pins, and other decorative closures was like Goldilocks looking for the perfect bed; there's a lot of stuff out there but nothing we found was "just right".

It probably will come as no surprise to anyone out there that waking up bright eyed and bushy tailed is especially hard here in the Pacific Northwest in Winter after the end of Daylight Savings when the sun rises well after the morning commute (to set again shortly before the commute home). Our day often begins in a dark, quiet room with the sound of Shibas snoring and Jason panicking “GAH… slept in again…”, jumping out of bed, stumbling to the closet while promptly stubbing his toe on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed and tripping over one of the Shiba kids, now fully awake and underfoot in the shadowy room.

NEW Garment Design Class by Shibaguyz Designz

7/6/2016

Crochet & Knit Garment Design Online Class!

We are very excited to announce the launch of our newest online Garment Design class from Interweave and Craft University.

Yup… in this eight week course, Shannon is going to share the skills we've used here at Shibaguyz Designz for our over 300 published designs and 9 books.

Whether you are a designer looking to up your skills or if you have always wanted to be a crochet and knitwear designer, you'll want to take this course. Even if you never want to publish your designs but want to make FAB garments for yourself, this is a course you don't want to miss out on!

Yes, the focus in the class is on crochet BUT it's all just stitches and rows, folks. And, whether you make those stitches and rows with hooks or sticks (or both), all of the handouts, worksheets, and course material applies equally to both crafts.

Yarn Substitution Help Is Here!

6/8/2016

Never be afraid to substitute yarn again!

We've all been there… You fall in love with a pattern only to find the yarn the designer used has been discontinued or is just not to your liking. It's a story is as old as the art of crochet itself. Perhaps even the worlds first Love-Hate relationship! "I LOVE this garment, but the pattern calls for superwash wool. I'm allergic to wool so I can't make it." or "This shawl uses 2 skeins of hand-spun lace weight yarn made from the plucked eyelashes of albino Vicuna, dyed in a mixture of crushed sapphires... can I use sport weight cotton/rayon instead?"

Don't let the idea of substituting one yarn for another fill your heart with a looming sense of dread. There are simple methods for making those kind of decisions - and, lucky you, there's now a downloadable video that will give you all the information you need to fearlessly swap one yarn for another!  <Insert Happy Dance Here>

Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns with Shannon Mullet-Bowlsby - A NEW Craftsy Crochet Class and Giveaway

4/7/2016

Picture
You've got your yarn, your hooks, and are ready to sit down and start creating that beautiful piece from the pattern you just purchased.  You turn to page 44 and start looking at the pattern... what the heck is HDC?  What direction am I supposed to be working?  There's something that looks like Egyptian hieroglyphics on the next page... what have I done? GAH!!

Fear not intrepid crocheter!  Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby and Craftsy are here to give you all the answers to finding, reading, and understanding crochet patterns.
Picture
Yep, Shannon and the folks at Craftsy have been working on another FAB crochet class and this one is all about Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns.  In fact that's what its called, "Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns" (direct and to the point!).

This course  was created to teach new crocheters all the skills you need to read and successfully navigate crochet patterns. This will also be a FAB reference tool for the "I've been reading crochet patterns for fourty years" experienced stitchers. Regardless of your skill level you'll be learning tons about the in's and out's of crochet pattern reading and you'll be able to keep the class as an instant reference tool anytime you need it!

Picture
You will learn by watching Shannon complete each stitch, while at the same time seeing the stitch's name, abbreviation, and chart symbols on your screen, so you'll recognize them in multiple formats... That's just the start!

You get to apply what you are learning right away by making the "Modern Sampler Scarf" pattern that comes with the course.  Shannon
helps you with reading the written pattern AND the chart and how it all translates into actual stitches and rows.  Before you know it you'll be piecing together your own sampler scarf with stitches so true they must have been blessed by a Pink Fairy Armadillo  (which incidentally is a real animal… GAH!). I'll be there with you every step of the way!

When you’ve completed the entire course, you'll be shocked by how easily you can read through crochet patterns and get to stitching more and more advanced pieces.  Don’t worry about forgetting any of the tips and techniques because the BEST part of all Craftsy classes is you can watch them whenever, and wherever you like and you can watch them as often as you like since your purchase never expires! Have a few minutes to watch a segment? Need to go back and see one of our tips & tricks again? Want to watch that technique one more time to get it juuuuust right? You can do ALL that with a Craftsy class because you own it forever!

National Craft Month Week 4 Giveaway: UPDATE - WINNER ANNOUNCED

National Craft Month Week 4 Giveaway Package Featuring: ZOOM LOOM! Weaving Done The Easy Way.

Zoom Loom by Schacht Spindle Co
The Shibaguyz love to try new things... from sewing to cooking to biking and hiking, we are always excited to pick up some new technique to add to our repertoire. That being said, we don't spend a lot of time looking for the hard way to do something. We are firm believers in giving yourself an easy victory then moving on to the next step.  So when the FAB folks at Schacht Spindle Company reached out to us to try their Zoom Loom we, of course, said "Sure, we'd love to give it a shot".

Shortly after our Zoom Loom arrived Jason picked it up and started playing with it. Even through he'd never used a pin loom before, within 30 minutes was making perfect squares for sewing/weaving together into larger pieces... Like we said, give yourself an easy victory, and this was easy.

Now he's now totally addicted! In just one evening of sitting in front of the television he can pop out 10-12 squares. He's already got a pile ready to piece together for a sampler afghan... all made of short scraps of yarn from left over projects that were just sitting in boxes waiting to be used. Jason says "It's like a quilter taking large pieces of fabric, cutting into small pieces to sew back together... only you get to create the pieces you want in whatever colors you like".

This is SO easy and SO much fun we asked the Schacht Spindle Company if they would be willing to give away a Zoom Loom for National Craft Month 2016. They said YES!  WOOHOO! So our week 4 giveaway package for National Craft Month 2016 features the Zoom Loom.

Here is what Schacht has to say about their Zoom Loom:
We’ve taken a simple design and transformed it into an efficient and comfortable little loom. If you’ve ever woven on a pin loom, you’ll love our new and improved model. Small and compact, the Zoom Loom is easy to take with you. Weave anywhere, any time.
  • - The sloping interior edge guides your weaving needle.
  • - Graceful extended sides are easy to hold.
  • - Molded-in instructions on the front and back are always there when you need them.
  • - A handy slot holds the starting yarn without knotting.
  • - Made in Boulder, Colorado!
Zoom Loom by Schacht Spindle Co
Now is your chance for some instant gratification of your own.  You can enter to win our National Crafty Month prize package including your very own Zoom Loom, provided by the Schacht Spindle Company.  Along with the Zoom Loom, this week's winner will also receive a signed copy of Shannon's new book, Crochet Geometry, (woohoo!) and an assortment of our favorite products from Eucalan Gentle Wash.

What a great Craft Month we've been having! Weeks 1 and 2 of National Craft Month have been stellar and we've got something completely different in store for you for Week 3. We're branching out into other areas of crafting with the help of one of our good friends and fellow Craftsy teacher, Katrina Walker. Read on for all the details...

Sewing Woes No More!

If you are anything like us (and most of you are) you have a sewing machine tucked away at the back of a closet that you pull out when a button comes off a shirt or you have a seam in need of mending. But there is so much more your machine can do... and it's time to learn a few tips from one of the best out there - for FREE!
Katrina Walker photo
Katrina Walker is a designer, educator and author known for her work in construction techniques, textile expertise and Modern American Pojagi piecework. Her work is featured in many magazines including Threads, SewStylish, Stitch, SewNews and Creative Machine Embroidery. She is a popular instructor both at national sewing shows and online, where her classes for Craftsy, Taunton Workshops, BurdaStyle, Craft University and Craft Daily have enrolled thousands of students worldwide. When she is not creating in her studio, Katrina is traveling nationwide spreading the love of sewing with Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking sewing machines.

What You Can Win This Week!

  • Free access to Katrina Walker's FAB Craftsy Course: Decorative Seams: Techniques and Finishes
  • An LED Mini-Flip Light from the awesome folks at Ottlite
  • A Gift Pack of 5 Bottles of Rinse Free Wash from Eucalan
Craftsy Decorative Seams Class by Katrina Walker
For our Week 3 giveaway Katrina has graciously offered one enrollment into her Craftsy.com course: Decorative Seams: Techniques and Finishes.  We've used this class to brush up on our skills as well as learn some FAB new techniques from Katrina!

Mini-LED ottlite
Yep, the FAB folks at Ottlite have also sponsored an item this week:
An LED Mini Flip Lite.

The Shibaguyz really love our LED Mini Flip Lites. Jason uses his most every day when he's sewing, weaving and even for throwing a little light onto a project he's photographing. It's the perfect size for carrying but throws a TON of light!

Eucalan Wash Gift Set
And Eucalan has provided us with a Gift Pack.

We can't say enough good things about Eucalan. Their product is tailor-made for the crochet and knitting handcrafter... although quilters and sewers swear by this cleaning product as well.  This set of 5 bottles of Eucalan is neatly packaged in a clear re-usable zip bag in each of their scents: Natural, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Jasmine.

Week 2 Giveaway: Craftsy Class, Ottlite, and Eucalan Wash

Picture
Week 1 of National Craft month was a huge success and we're continuing the party this week with an even bigger giveaway for you.

For Week 2 of National Craft Month you can enter to win:
  • A Free Download of Shannon's Newest Craftsy Course: Crochet Toolkit: Designer Tips & Tricks
  • An LED Mini-Flip Light from Ottlite
  • A Gift Pack of 5 Bottles of Rinse Free Wash from Eucalan

That's a LOT of swag my friends! Here's the full rundown.

Crochet Toolkit from Craftsy.com

Picture
Folks who follow our escapades on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram know Shannon took a little trip to Denver, Colorado back in December. If you were watching closely, you even noticed him posting a photo like this.

Yup… that's Shannon on set in front of THE Craftsy logo!

(Note the inclusion of garments from our last two books… hehehe…)
This class is a FAB fav topic of ours: Tips and tricks to take your crochet from good to great! In this course, Shannon takes you step-by-step through the process of how to make solid and lace fabrics, brush up your math skills, and he teaches you how to keep those edges clean and tidy for a professional appearance.  Dreaming of smooth, drapey fabric? Find out how linked stitches can close the gaps and make it happen. Then, add some "wow" techniques to your toolkit, such as crochet I-cord. Yup… two types of crochet cords including attached cords for edges!

Everything you learn here you'll be able to apply  right away! You get techniques and stitches we use in real life, every day.

For more info about this class including a promo video where Shannon tells you all about it, click on the button below.

Ottlite Mini LED Flip Light

Picture
We LOVE our OttLite lamps.  Shannon has two in his study and Jason uses them in his photo studio to get clear photos with clean white light.  We know you'll love this clip on LED light from OttLite!
  • Ottlite will send you a MiniLED flip-lite to pack in your bag or carry in a pocket so you always have clear bright light with you.  We recently used ours at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Show on the show floor to better see the colors of yarn perfectly without having to go outside.

With OttLite you’ll see more clearly and comfortably, which makes everything you love to do – from sewing and scrapbooking to reading and computer work to crafts and crossword puzzles – easier and more enjoyable. It’s like natural daylight indoors! Click here to learn more.

iCan Click – Professional Quality Photographs of Handmade Items Using Smartphones and Tablet

Recently I had the pleasure of filming a class for F&W media for their Craft U, online courses.  Let me tell you, those folks are great to work with!  I had a ball filming and think you'll love this course.

I was asked to present a class based on using cell phone and tablet cameras to photograph handmade works.  We wanted to focus on makers and crafters who specialize in crochet, knitting, weaving, and beading... but anyone who uses a cell phone or wants to take great photos with that magical device in their pocket will get a lot of GREAT information to use.

Here's a little bit about my class and who should take it…

iCan Click photo of floating yarn
Inspiration… weeks of work… elbow grease… the occasional tear… They’ve all gone into making perfect handmade item. It’s finished! Time to show it off on social media or sell it online; but alas, photography is not a skill you’ve honed. Now what?

It’s time to pull out your phone… Your smartphone camera is the ideal tool for taking that perfect shot of your handiwork; compact, powerful, and almost always found in your front pocket. It’s capable of capturing any special moment. You only need to learn to harness its full potential.

In my course you will learn the basics of how Smartphone cameras work, find the right light for photographing any handmade project, create a professional environment for taking your photos, explore a few downloadable apps to assist you in your quest for the perfect photo, and I’ll give you one sure-fire tip that is certain to take your photos from drab to FAB.

I’ve spent the past 10 years learning how to take breathtaking photographs of handmade items on any camera. Come and learn the simple techniques you can use to get professional quality photos of your handmade projects with your Smartphone.

The class runs from March 15th – May 9th 2016, and covers topics such as:
  • Intro to Smartphone Use
  • Get to Know Your Smartphone Camera
  • How to Manage Light & Other Useful Tools
  • Composition, Creativity, & Personal Style
  • Lightboxes, Swoops, & Backgrounds
  • Editing Your Photos
  • File Types, Sizing, Compression, & Storage
  • Final Thoughts from a Professional Photographer

To make learning simple and because we know you're going to want to practice each technique before going on to the next, only one segment will be released weekly.  You'll never feel pressured to sit down and try to absorb everything one evening. You can register anytime during these weeks but I recommend you register now to take full advantage of the time available to re-watch previous lessons. Here's an added bonus... I'll be monitoring the forum/gallery, answering your questions and giving feedback to all your posted projects.

Who should enroll in this class:
  • Makers who want to show off their work through professional looking photography without breaking the bank.
  • Independent professional designers who need to take great photos of their work for websites and online sales.
  • Artists who are unhappy with paying big fees for so-so photos that don't show their work in the best light possible.
  • Anyone with a cell phone or tablet camera who wants to take professional looking photos at home but is afraid of the cost, space, and time commitment.
Now's a great time to learn all the tricks to using your cell phone for taking amazing photos of your handmade items!  Enroll today by clicking the button below.
