SEWING & STITCHERY EXPO ASKS THE SHIBAGUYZ TO TEACH! O...M...G... Not going to minimize this at all folks, this is BIG... like King Kong big. We've been asked to teach two of our top classes at this year's Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallap, WA. For those of you who don't do any sewing, quilting, other such stitchery, allow me to explain.
Instant Closures... and Satisfaction Early in the process of creating Crochet Geometry we noticed that a number of the pieces would be perfectly suited for some beautiful adornment. Alas, finding striking buttons, pins, and other decorative closures was like Goldilocks looking for the perfect bed; there's a lot of stuff out there but nothing we found was "just right".
The Shibaguyz Will Be At Yarn Fest! Wow, 2017 is shaping up to be a busy year for us... that means even MORE opportunities for us to share the skills with you live and in person! WOOHOO!!
And now we can announce that there's another chance to take a class (or 5) from us live! Yup… we're going to be teaching five classes at Interweave Yarn Fest 2017! Enter Today to Win a New Ottlite Product - UPDATE Winner Announced It probably will come as no surprise to anyone out there that waking up bright eyed and bushy tailed is especially hard here in the Pacific Northwest in Winter after the end of Daylight Savings when the sun rises well after the morning commute (to set again shortly before the commute home). Our day often begins in a dark, quiet room with the sound of Shibas snoring and Jason panicking “GAH… slept in again…”, jumping out of bed, stumbling to the closet while promptly stubbing his toe on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed and tripping over one of the Shiba kids, now fully awake and underfoot in the shadowy room.
This is going to be Epic! Picture it… San Antonio, January 2017... you arrive at a posh hotel on the River Walk, your plan... taking DAYS to immerse yourself in learning crochet and knit garment design. You're FAB instructors begin with the basics, taking the time you need to really wrap your head around each topic before moving on to a deeper and deeper understanding. Swatching, blocking, shaping, patterning… Yes! they all become crystal clear after just a few days of intensive hands-on training. Each day, for three days, you get to come back for more and more. By the time you leave your brain is full of knowledge, your hands ready to stitch, and your spirit rejuvenated from the time spent there.
No, you're not daydreaming: Welcome to Camp STITCHES! Crochet & Knit Garment Design Online Class!
Check out this introduction video for more details about this exciting class! Never be afraid to substitute yarn again!
We've all been there… You fall in love with a pattern only to find the yarn the designer used has been discontinued or is just not to your liking. It's a story is as old as the art of crochet itself. Perhaps even the worlds first Love-Hate relationship! "I LOVE this garment, but the pattern calls for superwash wool. I'm allergic to wool so I can't make it." or "This shawl uses 2 skeins of hand-spun lace weight yarn made from the plucked eyelashes of albino Vicuna, dyed in a mixture of crushed sapphires... can I use sport weight cotton/rayon instead?"
Don't let the idea of substituting one yarn for another fill your heart with a looming sense of dread. There are simple methods for making those kind of decisions - and, lucky you, there's now a downloadable video that will give you all the information you need to fearlessly swap one yarn for another! <Insert Happy Dance Here> Hey there readers! We wanted to share this THRILLING news with you all that we received from our publisher today! Imagine our reaction when we read this email: "Booklist just released their 'Top 10 Crafts & Gardening Books: 2016' list… and both Crochet Geometry AND Designer Crochet were included! CONGRATULATIONS! Booklist is one of the publishing world’s leading industry publications… The list appeared in the May 15th issue of the magazine and can also be seen online…" Win a Free Class with The Shibaguyz and a three-day marketplace pass at Vogue Knitting Live in Pasadena. You've got your yarn, your hooks, and are ready to sit down and start creating that beautiful piece from the pattern you just purchased. You turn to page 44 and start looking at the pattern... what the heck is HDC? What direction am I supposed to be working? There's something that looks like Egyptian hieroglyphics on the next page... what have I done? GAH!! Fear not intrepid crocheter! Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby and Craftsy are here to give you all the answers to finding, reading, and understanding crochet patterns. Yep, Shannon and the folks at Craftsy have been working on another FAB crochet class and this one is all about Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns. In fact that's what its called, "Reading & Understanding Crochet Patterns" (direct and to the point!). This course was created to teach new crocheters all the skills you need to read and successfully navigate crochet patterns. This will also be a FAB reference tool for the "I've been reading crochet patterns for fourty years" experienced stitchers. Regardless of your skill level you'll be learning tons about the in's and out's of crochet pattern reading and you'll be able to keep the class as an instant reference tool anytime you need it! You will learn by watching Shannon complete each stitch, while at the same time seeing the stitch's name, abbreviation, and chart symbols on your screen, so you'll recognize them in multiple formats... That's just the start! You get to apply what you are learning right away by making the "Modern Sampler Scarf" pattern that comes with the course. Shannon helps you with reading the written pattern AND the chart and how it all translates into actual stitches and rows. Before you know it you'll be piecing together your own sampler scarf with stitches so true they must have been blessed by a Pink Fairy Armadillo (which incidentally is a real animal… GAH!). I'll be there with you every step of the way! When you’ve completed the entire course, you'll be shocked by how easily you can read through crochet patterns and get to stitching more and more advanced pieces. Don’t worry about forgetting any of the tips and techniques because the BEST part of all Craftsy classes is you can watch them whenever, and wherever you like and you can watch them as often as you like since your purchase never expires! Have a few minutes to watch a segment? Need to go back and see one of our tips & tricks again? Want to watch that technique one more time to get it juuuuust right? You can do ALL that with a Craftsy class because you own it forever! National Craft Month Week 4 Giveaway Package Featuring: ZOOM LOOM! Weaving Done The Easy Way.
The Shibaguyz love to try new things... from sewing to cooking to biking and hiking, we are always excited to pick up some new technique to add to our repertoire. That being said, we don't spend a lot of time looking for the hard way to do something. We are firm believers in giving yourself an easy victory then moving on to the next step. So when the FAB folks at Schacht Spindle Company reached out to us to try their Zoom Loom we, of course, said "Sure, we'd love to give it a shot".
Shortly after our Zoom Loom arrived Jason picked it up and started playing with it. Even through he'd never used a pin loom before, within 30 minutes was making perfect squares for sewing/weaving together into larger pieces... Like we said, give yourself an easy victory, and this was easy.
Now he's now totally addicted! In just one evening of sitting in front of the television he can pop out 10-12 squares. He's already got a pile ready to piece together for a sampler afghan... all made of short scraps of yarn from left over projects that were just sitting in boxes waiting to be used. Jason says "It's like a quilter taking large pieces of fabric, cutting into small pieces to sew back together... only you get to create the pieces you want in whatever colors you like".
This is SO easy and SO much fun we asked the Schacht Spindle Company if they would be willing to give away a Zoom Loom for National Craft Month 2016. They said YES! WOOHOO! So our week 4 giveaway package for National Craft Month 2016 features the Zoom Loom.
Here is what Schacht has to say about their Zoom Loom:

Here is what Schacht has to say about their Zoom Loom:
We’ve taken a simple design and transformed it into an efficient and comfortable little loom. If you’ve ever woven on a pin loom, you’ll love our new and improved model. Small and compact, the Zoom Loom is easy to take with you. Weave anywhere, any time.
- - The sloping interior edge guides your weaving needle.
- - Graceful extended sides are easy to hold.
- - Molded-in instructions on the front and back are always there when you need them.
- - A handy slot holds the starting yarn without knotting.
- - Made in Boulder, Colorado!
Now is your chance for some instant gratification of your own. You can enter to win our National Crafty Month prize package including your very own Zoom Loom, provided by the Schacht Spindle Company. Along with the Zoom Loom, this week's winner will also receive a signed copy of Shannon's new book, Crochet Geometry, (woohoo!) and an assortment of our favorite products from Eucalan Gentle Wash.

Crochet Toolkit from Craftsy.com
Folks who follow our escapades on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram know Shannon took a little trip to Denver, Colorado back in December. If you were watching closely, you even noticed him posting a photo like this.
Yup… that's Shannon on set in front of THE Craftsy logo! (Note the inclusion of garments from our last two books… hehehe…) |
This class is a FAB fav topic of ours: Tips and tricks to take your crochet from good to great! In this course, Shannon takes you step-by-step through the process of how to make solid and lace fabrics, brush up your math skills, and he teaches you how to keep those edges clean and tidy for a professional appearance. Dreaming of smooth, drapey fabric? Find out how linked stitches can close the gaps and make it happen. Then, add some "wow" techniques to your toolkit, such as crochet I-cord. Yup… two types of crochet cords including attached cords for edges!

iCan Click – Professional Quality Photographs of Handmade Items Using Smartphones and Tablet
Recently I had the pleasure of filming a class for F&W media for their Craft U, online courses. Let me tell you, those folks are great to work with! I had a ball filming and think you'll love this course. I was asked to present a class based on using cell phone and tablet cameras to photograph handmade works. We wanted to focus on makers and crafters who specialize in crochet, knitting, weaving, and beading... but anyone who uses a cell phone or wants to take great photos with that magical device in their pocket will get a lot of GREAT information to use. Here's a little bit about my class and who should take it… |
Inspiration… weeks of work… elbow grease… the occasional tear… They’ve all gone into making perfect handmade item. It’s finished! Time to show it off on social media or sell it online; but alas, photography is not a skill you’ve honed. Now what?
It’s time to pull out your phone… Your smartphone camera is the ideal tool for taking that perfect shot of your handiwork; compact, powerful, and almost always found in your front pocket. It’s capable of capturing any special moment. You only need to learn to harness its full potential.
In my course you will learn the basics of how Smartphone cameras work, find the right light for photographing any handmade project, create a professional environment for taking your photos, explore a few downloadable apps to assist you in your quest for the perfect photo, and I’ll give you one sure-fire tip that is certain to take your photos from drab to FAB.
I’ve spent the past 10 years learning how to take breathtaking photographs of handmade items on any camera. Come and learn the simple techniques you can use to get professional quality photos of your handmade projects with your Smartphone.
The class runs from March 15th – May 9th 2016, and covers topics such as:
To make learning simple and because we know you're going to want to practice each technique before going on to the next, only one segment will be released weekly. You'll never feel pressured to sit down and try to absorb everything one evening. You can register anytime during these weeks but I recommend you register now to take full advantage of the time available to re-watch previous lessons. Here's an added bonus... I'll be monitoring the forum/gallery, answering your questions and giving feedback to all your posted projects.
